Besides the many bird species that reside here - Texas is the gateway to North America’s Central Flyway, a sky-high migration corridor, that leads from the Texas Gulf Coast up as far as the Canadian tundra. Roughly 98.5% of North America’s long-distance migratory birds pass through Texas; that’s over 330 species!
Texas has more butterfly species and subspecies than any other state, over 400, partly due to its varied ecological regions. Texas offers unique habitats to many species. From the highest point in Texas at 8,751 feet to sea level along the Gulf Coast, a wide variety of butterflies can be found.

The Mid-Coast of Texas offers some of the best saltwater fishing locations in the US, including hailed some of the best inshore fishing destinations in the country. Texas also has 81 paddling trails for canoeing and kayaking through the various rivers, creeks, lakes, and bays. This is thanks to the many bays, estuaries, jetties, and bayous the state offers. Texas coast waters are brimming with fish year-round, but angling takes off to a whole new level in the Fall.
Texas is one of the best states in America for birdwatching due to its geographic diversity, hundreds of miles of coastline, sheer size, and major use as a flyway for migrants. Of course, Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is the wintering home of the iconic Whooping Cranes, along with other well-known birding sites and hidden gems throughout the Coastal Bend from Central Coast Birding Trail- Aransas, Calhoun, Matagorda.
Spring and Fall are "go" times for migratory birds.
